2 Ingredients You Can Use To Naturally Remove Teeth Plaque

Posted on

It's important for your oral health that you keep your teeth clean of sticky plaque and hardened tartar, as both are filled with bacteria that can cause gum disease and cavities. There are several natural ways you can maintain your oral health using ingredients you may already have in your home. Here are instructions for using two ingredients to clean your teeth of plaque.

Make and Use Baking Soda Toothpaste and Mouthwash

Baking soda helps to remove plaque from your teeth, without using commercially made toothpastes and any chemicals they contain. Then, baking soda can also help to reduce stains to your teeth from coffee, tea, and smoking.

Because baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which is a salt, and salt is antimicrobial, it also helps to fight off bacteria, viruses, and parasites in your mouth. Then, when you brush your teeth with baking soda, you are also helping to make your mouth less acidic and more alkaline. This makes your mouth a less hospitable environment for cavity-producing bacteria to grow. These types of bacteria will live in an acidic environment with a pH of 5.5 and below. Using baking soda in your mouth to brush your teeth raises your oral pH level up to a level above 5.5, eliminating the opportunity for bad bacteria to grow and encourages the growth of probiotic, or good bacteria.

Make your own baking soda toothpaste by pouring some into a small container, wetting your toothbrush and dipping it into the baking soda. Use your baking soda-covered tooth brush to brush your teeth. Make sure you hold your toothbrush between two fingers to help keep from scrubbing your teeth too vigorously. Don't hold your toothbrush in a fist. Because baking soda has the same hardness rating as the dentin layer of your teeth, if you scrub at any exposed dentin around your gum line, you can damage this sensitive layer.

You can also make your own baking soda mouthwash to rinse your mouth twice a day and further raise the pH of your mouth. You will need:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • 10 drops essential lemon oil
  • 4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

Mix all this together and swish a mouthful around morning and night, just as you would with a commercially made mouth wash. Store the remaining mouthwash in a plastic bottle and shake the contents well before each use.

Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

The practice of oil pulling is an old Ayurvedic remedy used to to cure many different ailments and remove toxins from your mouth and body, including removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth. It is recommended to do oil pulling first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything.

To practice the method of oil pulling, place approximately one tablespoon of organic virgin coconut oil in your mouth and allow it to melt. Swish the oil around in your mouth and between all your teeth, including your back molars, for 10 to 20 minutes. Then, spit it out into the trash. The oil should look like a thin white foam. If the oil is clear or yellow, you did not swish the oil around in your mouth long enough and should repeat the process. Last, rinse your mouth with water.

Swishing the liquefied oil in your mouth loosens and dissolves plaque and tartar from your teeth and collect any oral bacteria. The tartar, plaque, and bacteria become trapped within the oil during the pulling process, then they are spit out of your mouth with the oil. If you have an overabundance of bad bacteria in your mouth, this can help keep your mouth healthy by removing the cavity-producing bacteria.
